Ontario Centres of Excellence’s (OCE’s) Market Readiness program helps researchers advance to the next stages of commercialization by turning valuable research into a marketable product or service.

By supporting the further development of Intellectual Property (IP) from Ontario universities, colleges and hospitals, OCE's Market Readiness program assists in the various stages towards commercialization.

Kela Medical received $150,000 in Phase II of the program for businesses in the Development and Validation Stages based on external and internal peer reviews. Phase II covers all stages of development, with the developed plans now being executed while marketing and production plans are developed, as well as the validation stage, where the product is tested, customers are surveyed and the financial feasibility is determined.

A portion of this funding has been used to engage an Embedded Executive; Darren Hay, a senior healthcare executive specializing in health system transformation and healthcare modernization, has joined Kela Medical as Chief Operating Officer.  With over eighteen years experience in managing the introduction and adoption of teleheatlh and ehealth innovation, Darren is a exciting addition to the Kela Medical team.

CEO and Founder of Kela Medical, Arjun Kumar, has made a second consecutive trip to the winners’ circle as one of 20 Young Entrepreneurial Leaders in the second annual FuEL Awards representing youth entrepreneurship at it’s best. As a Top 20 winner, Arjun received the title, coverage in PROFIT Magazine, consulting services from KPMG Enterprise and passes to the 2013 PROFIT 200 CEO Summit and GrowthCamp.

Launched in 2011, the FuEL Awards were created to promote entrepreneurship in Canada by identifying forward-thinking role models for youth and illustrating the many benefits of venturing out on one's own. Celebrating Canada's Future Entrepreneurial Leaders, the FuEL Awards honour the achievements and aspirations of entrepreneurs under the age of 30, identify role models for progressive business practices and inspire youth to make entrepreneurship their No. 1 career choice. The FuEL Awards were founded by PROFIT Magazine in partnership with Impact Entrepreneurship Group.

Arjun Kumar of Kela Medical has been nominated for a second straight year in the Future Entrepreneurial Leaders (FuEL) Awards earlier this month, alongside two fellow Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) supported CEOs. Created to promote entrepreneurship in Canada, the FuEL Awards identify forward-thinking role models for youth and illustrates the many benefits of venturing out on one's own.

The 20 nominees deemed Canada's Future Entrepreneurial Leaders in 2012 will receive the title, coverage in PROFIT Magazine, consulting services from KPMG Enterprise and passes to the 2013 PROFIT 200 CEO Summit and GrowthCamp. Organizers will also present a People's Choice Award to the nominee with the most public votes.

Voting is open until August 17, 2012. Members of the public can vote daily, determining the People’s Choice winner as well as 20% of each candidate's final score. A panel of judges decides the remaining 80%, with winners being announced November 12.

Kela Medical is currently front and centre on the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) homepage as a success story. In early 2011, OCE supported a collaborative project with Kela Medical Inc. and the University of Toronto, through the Technical Problem Solving program.

CEO OF KELA MEDICAL TO JOIN CANADIAN DELEGATION AT THE G20 YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR SUMMIT IN MEXICO

Entrepreneur, Arjun Kumar, CEO of Kela Medical Inc. will return as one of 25 entrepreneurs chosen to represent Canada by the Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF.ca) at the 2012 G20 Young Entrepreneurs Summit (YES) in Mexico City, Mexico. The G20 YES is an official program of the G20 Young Entrepreneurs' Alliance (G20 YEA).

Mr. Kumar previously attended the 2011 G20 Young Entrepreneurs Summit in Nice, France where he was part of 28 Canadian entrepreneurs selected to develop entrepreneurial recommendations that were delivered to the G20 leaders on November 3rd, 2011 in Cannes.

"It is an absolute honour to be invited to join the delegation of Canadians attending the G20 YES. It was one of the most inspiring experiences to be surrounded by 400 delegates from around the world, all with the same passion for entrepreneurship", says Mr. Kumar.

Mr. Kumar was selected by the Canadian delegation organizers in recognition of his dynamic entrepreneurial spirit, drive, and passion, and for his role as one of Canada's job creators and innovators with his company, Kela Medical. At the summit, delegates will collaborate with their international colleagues, discussing critical issues including ways that governments and business communities can best harness the potential of young entrepreneurs, while also driving public policy, raising awareness and providing a voice for young entrepreneurs globally. Conclusions resulting from these discussions will be drafted into an official communiqué to be presented to the G20 world leaders in Cabo San Lucas at the end of June.

Organized in parallel to the G20 summit, the G20 YES is brings together 20 delegations of 400 of the most emblematic entrepreneurs aged 18 to 45 from G20 member states.

KELA BREAKS GUINESS RECORD AT DISCOVERY 12

This week, Kela Medical attended the Discovery 12 conference at Metro Toronto Convention Centre as an exhibitor. The annual event put on by Ontario Centres of Excellence, brings together the best and brightest minds in industry, investors, academia, and government to showcase leading-edge technologies, best practices and research in the areas of clean energy, advanced health, digital media and information and communications technologies and advanced manufacturing.

This year, Discovery 12 used the event as a platform to set a new world record. CEO Arjun Kumar participated as a mentor in The World's Largest Business Mentoring event which was the first to set the Guiness Record for "Most People Attending a Business Speed Networking Event - Single Venue". Over 160 of the brightest business leaders in the country with more than 160 enthusiastic entrepreneurs broke into two groups, mentors and proteges, to take part in an innovative “speed-dating” type event! It was acheived by participating in multiple three minute mentoring discussions with the goal of providing support and advice for Ontario's innovation entrepreneurs.

“Having the opportunity to meet the some of the great minds of tomorrow was a phenomenal experience. It really takes me back to the initial days when I founded my company and was attending the Discovery show for the first time, overwhelmed with all the opportunities that existed in Ontario. The Ontario Centres of Excellence have really outdone themselves this year and I am very excited to attend Discovery13 next year.” says Mr. Kumar.

KELA CONQUERS THE CN TOWER FOR THE WWF CANADA

On Thursday, the Kela Medical team participated in the the 22nd annual Canada Life CN Tower Climb for WWF Canada. Kela Medical raised a total of $1,663 and climbed the 1,776 stairs to raise money for the WWF.

The Kela team consisted of six members: Sara Bond, Scott Gray, Daniel Sin, Kathleen Babin, Arjun Kumar and board member Dr. Christopher Culligan (not pictured). We would like to thank everyone who sponsored them to go above and beyond their fundraising goals!

Over the past 22 years, over 86,000 climbers and close to 5,000 volunteers have supported the annual event.
The funds raised will help the WWF Canada protect fragile ecosystems, educate for real change, ensure industry plays its part, influence government on behalf of all Canadians, protect the species and spaces that make Canada the envy of the world.

CTO DANIEL SIN APPOINTED TO NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Kela Medical would like to congratulate it's CTO Daniel Sin on being appointed to the national advisory committee on Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCMs).

The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, announced the creation of the new committee, with the mandate to provide Health Canada's Natural Health Products Program Directorates with advice on current and emerging issues related to Traditional Chinese Medicines such as the importation, sale, and use of TCMs in Canada, including novel TCMs.

This week, Whitby-based entrepreneur, Arjun Kumar, CEO of Kela Medical will be one of 28 Canadian entrepreneurs selected to represent the country at the 2011 G20 Young Entrepreneur Summit in Nice, France.

Just days before the world leaders will convene in Cannes for the G20 Summit, these young business leaders along with entrepreneurs from other G20 member nations, will take the stage to emphasize the vital role played by young entrepreneurs in promoting economic growth and innovation.

Mr. Kumar was selected by the Canadian delegation organizers in recognition of his dynamic entrepreneurial spirit, drive, and passion, and for his role as one of Canada's job creators and innovators with his company, Kela Medical.

As the first smartcard system of its kind, Kela Medical proudly launched its revolutionary pHR card in May 2011, offering patients and healthcare providers with better access to health records while also providing them with the security they demand. The system uses patented technology to provide economical solutions for physicians and patients to create, access, and maintain electronic medical records. It is the first smartcard system of its kind with the capacity to manage medical reports, structured health data, and diagnostic imaging. It will also work with any population-wide Electronic Medical Record system being developed by governments and payors.

KELA MEDICAL OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES THE KELA pHR CARD

On Friday May 13th, Kela Medical Inc., launched the pHR card, a revolutionary technology developed to provide individuals and their healthcare providers with better access to individuals' healthcare records while at the same time providing them with the protective security they want and deserve.

The system uses patented technology to provide economical solutions for physicians and patients to create, access, and maintain electronic medical records. It is the first smartcard system of its kind with the capacity to manage medical reports, structured health data, and diagnostic imaging.

"At Kela, we are providing patients with access to their records that will help them better understand any medical condition they are experiencing. This access will provide accurate, reliable and complete insight into their personal health history and put healthcare into their own hands," said Arjun Kumar, CEO of Kela Medical.

In 2000, unnecessary testing, adverse drug reactions and medical errors cost approximately $136 billion and resulted in 241,000 deaths in the USA. With similar numbers in Canada, it is a hard picture to ignore.

"Kela has developed a made-in-Ontario solution for portable health records. The world is moving to card-based medical records, and the pHR Card has the potential to lead that change globally," said The Honourable Glen Murray, Minister of Research and Innovation. "By helping to reduce costs, speed up treatment times and reduce errors, the pHR Card is a shining example of innovation in action. Through partnerships like these, we are improving the lives of Ontarians by supporting the innovation economy of the future."

The pHR card is safe and reliable. All files have has complete encryption, ensuring that confidential information remains secure. The card will be complementary and compatible with any new eHealth initiatives launched by government. With a strong background in the healthcare field and with strong support from the community and government, Kela successfully launched the pHR card on Friday at their corporate offices in Whitby, Ontario.

"Providing high quality access to healthcare is always a top priority. As the need for greater access and increased protection grows, technologies such as the pHR card are a necessary and welcomed innovation to our town. We are pleased Kela Medical has chosen Whitby as the home for their new offices," said Whitby Mayor, Pat Perkins.

"Through collaborative efforts with government agencies, we were able to consistently improve our technology to ensure that we could bring a product that would increase access, allow for consolidation and protect consumers," said Dr Ramesh Zacharias President, "at Kela, we are pleased that we can provide one record for one patient."

KELA MEDICAL HOSTS GTACC'S EMR SEMINAR

On the 5th, Kela Medical Inc., in collaboration with the Greater Toronto Area Community Cardiovascular Specialists Organization (GTACC) hosted a seminar for Cardiologists about EMR conversion. The first of it’s kind, the seminar was attended by over 30 Cardiologists, office administrators, and clinic IT individuals interested in learning more about the options EMR vendors can provide specifically for their specialist practices. The seminar stressed the unique requirements for specialists using EMRs. Practice Solutions, JonokeMed, Nightingale and AbelMed presented product demonstrations and took questions.

Kela Medical and OntarioMD also presented. Kela Medical explained their services for complete EMR conversion assistance, while OntarioMD presented the opportunity to apply for government funding for EMR adoption.

As a result of the seminar, Kela Medical Inc. has been engaged by GTACC to lead a committee that will assist the EMR vendors to create a specialized version of their systems for Cardiologists.
